Raipur (thestates.news) | Munshi Premchand known as the Upanyas Samrat (Master Novelist), in modern Hindi literature was a pioneer of Hindi and Urdu social fiction. He was one of the first authors to write about caste hierarchies and the plights of women and labourers prevalent in the society of the late 1880s. He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindi writers of the early twentieth century. His illustrious works, including “Sevasadan,” “Karmabhoomi,” “Gaban,” “Godaan,” and “Nirmala,” continue to resonate with readers, addressing timeless social issues.
Kalinga University commemorated the 144 th birth anniversary of Munshi Premchand, by
organizing a special lecture under the supervision of the Hindi Department, Faculty of Arts and
Humanities.
Dr. Umesh Kumar Pandey, Senior Professor at the Government Autonomous Postgraduate College, Ambikapur, was present as the keynote speaker at the event virtually.
The program began with a lamp-lighting ceremony, garlanding the statue of Maa Saraswati and
paying tribute to the Katha Samrat Premchand. The event took place in the presence of The Chief
Guest of the event Dr. R.K. Agarwal, Retired Senior Professor and Educationist from the
Chhattisgarh Higher Education Department. Dr. Umesh Kumar Pandey, emphasized that
Premchand’s works continue to be a lasting source of inspiration, not only for the Hindi language
and literature but also for addressing various societal and national issues. He also mentioned that
Premchand’s writings offer insights into problems such as the plight of farmers and communalism,
providing relevant solutions. Dr. Pandey highlighted Premchand’s enduring legacy in Hindi prose
literature, affirming that his literary contributions will always be remembered.
Dr. Ajay Kumar Shukla, Head of the Hindi Department, Kalinga University, highlighted
Premchand’s biography and works, stating that he enriched Hindi literature with over three hundred stories and timeless novels. He acknowledged Premchand as the most popular writer of Hindi stories and novels, who, instead of writing magical, entertaining, and didactic tales of kings and queens, depicted the real events and realistic aspects of society.
Munshi Premchand’s literary contributions continue to enlighten and inspire readers, offering a
window into the socio-economic and cultural issues of his era.
The program was well organized by Ms. Shruti Singh, Assistant Professor in the Political Science
Department. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Harishankar, Assistant Professor in the
Geography Department. Dr. Harsha Patil, Head of the Research Department along with other
professors, researchers, and students from various departments of the university attended the event.
