Enhancing Ease of Doing Business, Expanding Employment Opportunities, and Strengthening State Revenue
Raipur (thestates.news) | The Chhattisgarh government’s implementation of the New Shops and Establishments Act has been widely welcomed by the business community and the public, marking a significant step towards economic modernization and business-friendly reforms. This progressive legislation aims to enhance ease of doing business, generate new employment opportunities, and strengthen the state’s economic foundation.
A key highlight of the Act is the provision allowing shops and commercial establishments to operate without time restrictions, offering entrepreneurs greater operational flexibility and providing consumers with enhanced convenience. However, this regulation will not apply to liquor stores.
Catalyzing Trade and Employment Growth
The new policy framework aligns with national initiatives to foster a pro-business environment, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and empowering entrepreneurs. Some key features include simplified registration process – Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will benefit from reduced paperwork and faster approvals. Establishments already registered will have a six-month window to obtain a Labor Identification Number (LIN) without incurring additional costs. Applications beyond this period will be subject to nominal processing fees. The move is expected to attract investments, strengthen supply chains, and create new job opportunities across urban and semi-urban areas.
24/7 Business Operations: A Bold Reform for Economic Expansion
One of the most significant provisions of the Act is the removal of mandatory weekly closures, allowing businesses to operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day at their discretion. This reform is expected to boost employment generation, as longer working hours will necessitate more workforce recruitment, enhance consumer accessibility, particularly in urban centers where demand for extended operational hours is high, increased state revenue, as prolonged business hours will lead to higher sales volumes and economic activity.
Balancing Business Freedom with Labor Welfare
While offering businesses greater autonomy, the government has ensured that workers’ rights remain protected, reinforcing its commitment to labor welfare. According to the provisions, Employees must receive at least one day of rest each week. No employee shall be required to work beyond eight hours a day, in compliance with labor laws. Employers are mandated to uphold employee rights under existing regulations.
