Chhattisgarh’s first solar-powered girls’ toilet built under VB-G RAM G in Raipur’s Tarra village

₹7 lakh facility developed under the ‘Meri Beti–Mera Abhiman’ campaign, with solar lighting and modern amenities

Separate toilet, ramp and support railings provided for girls with disabilities

Raipur (thestates.news) | Chhattisgarh’s first solar-powered toilet for girls has been built at the government primary and middle school in Tarra village in Raipur district’s Abhanpur block. Constructed at a cost of around ₹7 lakh under the ‘Meri Beti–Mera Abhiman’ campaign, implemented under the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar & Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G), the facility is equipped with solar-powered lighting and special provisions for girls with disabilities. It will benefit 70 girl students and two women teachers at the school.

Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai launched the state-wide ‘Meri Beti–Mera Abhiman’ campaign under VB-G RAM G to promote the safety, dignity and well-being of girls. The campaign aims to ensure that every rural government school in Chhattisgarh has a separate toilet for girls by January 26, 2027. It is also intended to provide girls with a safe, clean and dignified school environment, encourage regular attendance and help them continue their education without avoidable barriers.

 *Solar lighting and accessible facilities*

Of the ₹7 lakh spent on the project, ₹5 lakh was provided under VB-G RAM G, while Raipur Collector Shri Gaurav Singh sanctioned another ₹2 lakh from DMF. Solar panels have been installed on the roof to provide lighting, while a tap and a Sintex water tank have been installed to ensure water availability.

The toilet also has a sanitary pad incinerator to support menstrual hygiene. A separate toilet, ramp and support railings have been provided for girls with disabilities to make the facility more accessible. Paver blocks have been laid in the premises, plantation and arrangements for regular cleaning have also been undertaken to maintain a clean environment.

*New toilet brings relief to students and teachers*

The school’s old toilet had become dilapidated, forcing girl students to return home whenever they needed to use a toilet. Female teachers had to depend on the facilities at the panchayat building. The lack of a functional toilet caused considerable inconvenience and affected students’ school routine.

To address the problem, a new toilet was approved and subsequently constructed with the support of local representatives, departmental officials, teachers and villagers.

The new facility has brought relief to students, who said the absence of a usable toilet had caused considerable difficulty and, at times, discouraged them from attending school. With a clean and convenient toilet now available on campus, they can attend classes and continue their studies without having to leave school to use the toilet. Women teachers have also welcomed the new facility.

*94 more girls’ toilets planned in Abhanpur block*

Janpad Panchayat Abhanpur Chief Executive Officer Shri Dayanand Dewangan said sites had been identified for the construction of 94 girls’ toilets across the block under the ‘Meri Beti–Mera Abhiman’ campaign. Similar facilities are planned at all the identified locations.

He said the toilet in Tarra had been designed on the lines of airport toilets, with a focus on providing modern amenities and maintaining hygiene. Under Collector Shri Gaurav Singh’s guidance, similar facilities are being planned at other sites. These will also include sanitary pad incinerators to promote menstrual hygiene and safeguard students’ health.

The initiative in Tarra brings together sanitation, renewable energy and accessible infrastructure in a rural school setting. Through the ‘Meri Beti–Mera Abhiman’ campaign, the state is working to expand access to facilities that support girls’ health, safety and dignity while encouraging regular school attendance and continued education.
