Raipur (thestates.news)| The National Human Rights Commission, taking suo moto cognizance of a 23-year-old man committing suicide by jumping in front of a moving train in Bilha police station area of Nyaydhani Bilaspur, has issued a notice to Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Ashok Juneja, seeking a reply within four weeks.
Harishchandra Gendale, who lived in Bhainsbod of Bilha area, committed suicide by jumping in front of the train on Monday night. The police took the dead body into custody. The relatives on Tuesday accused Rooplal Chandra, the constable posted at Bilha police station, of assaulting the youth’s father and demanding ₹20,000. Due to the beating of his father in front of the young man, he talked about committing suicide by jumping in front of the train. The relatives demanded the dismissal of constable Rooplal Chandra and the registration of a case of abetment to suicide against him. Due to this, there was an uproar outside the Bilha police station throughout the day on Tuesday. The dead body of the deceased youth was cremated on Thursday afternoon after persuasion by senior officials.
The Commission says that the incident, if true, violates the right to life and dignity of the victims. Apparently, it was a simple case of hitting someone with a bike, but due to the abuse of power by the police, the victim’s father was illegally arrested, detained, and also thrashed. Not able to bear it, his son committed suicide. The commission has issued a notice to DGP Juneja seeking a detailed report within four weeks regarding whether any relief has been given to the victim’s family including action against the police personnel responsible for the case and also has asked its Special Rapporteur Umesh Kumar Sharma to visit the concerned police station in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh to ascertain the facts.(H.S):
