New Delhi, (the states. news) As the indefinite
strike by nursing staff of the country’s premiere All India Institute of
Medical Sciences (AIIMS) entered the second day on Tuesday, emergency services
at the premier hospital took a hit and critical care patients left unattended
due to the ongoing strike.
The Health Secretary has issued a stern warning to the protesting nursing staff
and directed AIIMS director Randeep Guleria to ensure no disruption of nursing
services after the AIIMS-Delhi Nurses’ Union went on an indefinite strike.
Warning that non-compliance will be treated as an offence under the Disaster
Management Act read with the Indian Penal Code and action will be taken
accordingly against defaulting authorities/employees, Mr Rajesh Bhushan,
Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said “It’s hereby
directed that AlIMS Delhi should ensure that directions of Delhi High Court are
strictly complied with without fail and there should be no cessation or
disruption of nursing functions in AllMS nor such an action aided or
abetted.”
The AIIMS administration has issued a letter to the protesting nursing staff stating,
“It may be ensured that attendance of all the Nursing personnel who report
for duty is mandatorily recorded and those absent, to be marked as such.”
AIIMS authorities were reportedly considering curtailing its emergency
services. Meanwhile, a high-level meeting was held between top officials of the
premier institute of the country, including its Director Randeep Guleria to
resolve the situation.
About 5,000 nurses of AIIMS are on an indefinite strike since Monday afternoon
against the hospital’s decision to enroll nursing officers on contractual
payroll. The AIIMS Nurses Union launched their indefinite strike from Monday
over their long-pending demands, including correction in anomaly in the Sixth
Central Pay Commission salaries and against contractual appointments. (uni)
