Guest lecture on the “Role of Microorganisms in Plants and Human Health” @ Kalinga University

Raipur (thestates.news) | On August 28, 2025, the Faculty of Science, Department of Microbiology and Botany, Kalinga University, Raipur, organized an online guest lecture on the topic “Role of Microorganisms in Plant and Human Health.” The keynote speaker was Dr. Chayanika Putatunda, Associate Professor (Microbiology) at Om Sterling Global University, Haryana.

In her lecture, Dr. Putatunda explained that the impact of microorganisms found in the gut (gut microbiota) is not limited to digestion alone, but also affects the brain, heart, liver, lungs, bones, kidneys, and reproductive organs. This imbalance (dysbiosis) can lead to serious diseases such as stress, depression, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes. She highlighted modern techniques
such as probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiome transplantation as solutions.

The lecture also covered biotechnological applications of microbiology, including vaccines, antibody production, insulin production, and the problem of antibiotic resistance. Additionally, topics such as the cleanliness of the Ganga River, the utility of cyanobacteria, and indigenous remedies like the use of soil and turmeric were discussed.

The event was conducted by Dr. Faiz Baksh and Dr. Pradeep Kumar. The lecture proved to be highly informative and beneficial. The Dean of the Faculty of Science and other faculty members from the Department of Botany and Microbiology were also present at the event.
