One Day Workshop on Disaster Management @ Kalinga University

Raipur (thestates.news) Disaster management is a process of effectively preparing for and responding to disasters. It involves strategically organizing resources to lessen the harm that disasters cause. It also involves a systematic approach to managing the responsibilities of disaster
prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Kalinga University recently organized a highly informative workshop on “Disaster Management” on its campus.

The event was designed to capture the key issues in disaster management, first aid, rescu e operations,  firefighting, and core group formation. The event’s Keynote Speaker was
Mr. Jitendra Solanki, a Disaster Management Expert from the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.

The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Lt. Vibha Chandrakar, Incharge Dean of Students’ Welfare, who set the tone for the engaging session ahead. Mr. Jitendra
Solanki, Disaster Management Expert, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Government of Chhattisgarh was warmly welcomed with a potted plant, symbolizing
growth and resilience, fitting themes for the day’s discussions.

The workshop attracted a large audience, including students from the Bachelor of
Technology, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning
departments. Mr. Solanki started the interactive session by discussing various types of
disasters, categorizing them into natural and man-made, and elaborating on effective
management strategies for each. Students eagerly participated, sharing their own
experiences with earthquakes and other natural calamities, making the session lively and
relevant.

Highlighting fire safety, Mr. Solanki explained that fire requires three elements to ignite
and sustain: heat, fuel, and oxygen. He demonstrated how eliminating one of these
elements can extinguish a fire, with firefighters often interrupting the oxygen supply
using various techniques.

Further adding to the discussion, Mr. Solanki also discussed the necessity of identifying
fire types and selecting the appropriate fire extinguisher. His session on fire and disaster
management was both theoretical and practical. He demonstrated in real time how to
put out a fire with a dry powder fire extinguisher in the garden area. This hands-on
experience thrilled the students, who also had the opportunity to operate the equipment
themselves, learning vital firefighting techniques on campus.

The event concluded with Lt. General Vibha Chandrakar presenting a memento to
Mr. Solanki in gratitude of his insightful contribution to the workshop. The program was
well-coordinated by the DSW team and was praised by students for its practical approach
to disaster management education.
