Ram Gopal Varma frames ‘Dhurandhar 2’ vs ‘Toxic’ box office clash as battle of cinema ideals

New Delhi, (thestates.news) | Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has weighed in on the much-anticipated March 19 box office clash between ‘Dhurandhar 2’ and ‘Toxic’, framing it as more than just a contest between two films. In a detailed and sharply worded social media post, Varma described the release as a confrontation between two fundamentally different approaches to cinema.
Using the hashtag ‘Dhuroxic’, Varma described Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2 as a film grounded in “cause, effect, and consequence,” where violence serves moral, psychological, and political purposes rather than mere spectacle.

He noted that characters in such cinema act out of necessity, not to look “cool,” and the storytelling trusts the audience to engage with silence and discomfort. By contrast, Varma positioned Geetu Mohandas’ Toxic as cinema where “style precedes logic,” arguing that its violence exists mainly to project attitude, without adding meaningful depth to the narrative.

He suggested that the box office showdown would reveal whether audiences gravitate toward stimulation over emotional engagement—choosing fantasy “dressed as seriousness” or confronting the stark realities portrayed in films like ‘Dhurandhar 2’. (S-UNI)
