New Delhi (The States. news) Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu today called for a rethinking of the methods being adopted for planning and construction of houses to ensure proper air circulation and sunlight access to the indoor parts of the buildings. He said that the COVID pandemic has timely reminded us that the air we breathe also determines our health and well being.
Shri Naidu referred to research studies showing that even normal breathing or talking can cause air transmission of viruses as viruses are suspended in the air for hours. He said that crowded places with poor ventilation can pose a high infection risk for persons exposed to stagnant air there. In this regard, he called for creating living and working spaces with adequate ventilation and natural light and urged the medical community to take this message to the masses.
Virtually inaugurating the 2nd Annual International Conference on Interventional Pulmonology-BRONCUS-(BRONCHUS) 2021 from the Vice President’s residence, Shri Naidu said that people have become more aware of the importance of respiratory health after the pandemic. He remarked that there should be greater public access – both by the government and civil society – on the treatment of lung and throat cancers caused by tobacco use.
Shri Naidu expressed concern over the deteriorating outdoor air quality in major cities especially during the winter months. Pointing out climate change and vehicular pollution as major contributing factors, he stressed the need for a serious rethink on our approach to sustainable development. He also called on people to evaluate their lifestyles and try to reduce their carbon use as much as possible. Noting the advances in robotics and confocal microscopy in the field of pulmonology, Shri Naidu said that India has many advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and is fast becoming a preferred medical tourism destination in the world.
He also stressed on the need to establish good health facilities in rural areas and urged the private sector to supplement the efforts of the government in this regard by opening satellite centers of their urban facilities. “India’s traditional potential in the field of Information Technology (IT) and telecommunications should be fully harnessed to provide world-class telemedicine facilities to our villages,” he said. He also urged the stakeholders in the healthcare industry to reduce the cost of healthcare for the common man and make healthcare affordable and accessible to all. Expressing confidence that India will overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic as immunization is on the way now, he congratulated all the stakeholders for working as Team India to contain the spread of Coronavirus. In view of the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases including respiratory disorders in India, the Vice President advised the youth to adopt a healthy and disciplined lifestyle. “Avoid sedentary habits and unhealthy diet and adopt regular physical activity like doing yoga or cycling,” he said.
