Gem-Quality Diamonds Discovered in Mahasamund, Signalling a Potential New Diamond Belt for India

Discovery of This Mineral Asset would Add a New Dimension to the Development of Chhattisgarh

A significant development from Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district has drawn the attention of India’s mining and mineral sector, marking a new milestone in the state’s developmental journey. Five diamonds with a total weight of 1.22 carats have been recovered after the processing of 200 tonnes of bulk sample material from the Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block in the Saraipali region. Experts and officials believe this discovery is a crucial geological indicator that strengthens the possibility of larger diamond deposits in the area, offering a new source of revenue and economic growth for the state.

This achievement has been officially confirmed by NMDC-CMDC Limited, a joint venture between NMDC and the Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC). The discovery follows a rigorous scientific exploration process, including stream sediment sampling, geophysical surveys, and 500 metres of exploratory drilling to identify prospective diamond-bearing zones. Following these surveys, 200 tonnes of mineral material were transported to NMDC’s Diamond Processing Plant in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, where the diamonds were recovered. The recovery includes two gem-quality whitish diamonds weighing 0.19 carats and 0.06 carats, along with three other non-gem-grade stones weighing a total of 0.97 carats.

Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his enthusiasm regarding the discovery, describing it as a significant achievement that highlights the state’s vast economic potential and the success of scientific exploration of natural resources. He stated that the government is committed to the scientific exploration, transparent management, and value-added industrial development of mineral resources. Noting that Chhattisgarh is already a leading producer of iron ore, coal, bauxite, and limestone, Chief Minister Shri Sai emphasized that the confirmation of diamond potential further enriches the state’s mineral diversity and strengthens its mineral economy. He said that the state’s policy is focused not merely on extraction, but on fostering mineral-based industries, value-addition units, and local employment generation to realize the vision of a developed Chhattisgarh.

Mining experts and government officials view this preliminary success as a vital signal for future exploration. It is expected to pave the way for comprehensive studies regarding the region’s geological structure and resource capacity, which will enable more accurate assessments in the coming years. By leveraging modern technology and continued scientific exploration, the state aims to identify further potential zones. If subsequent stages yield positive results, Mahasamund could emerge as a promising new hub in India’s mineral-based economy, contributing to domestic resource strength, industrial investment, and inclusive development.

It is noteworthy that all five stones have been deposited in the NMDC strong room in Panna, with further actions to be taken in accordance with scientific standards and official regulations.
