SC gives green signal to OBC reservation for Madhya Pradesh civic polls

New Delhi (thestates.news)|  The Supreme Court has allowed OBC reservation in Madhya Pradesh civic elections. The court directed the State Election Commission to issue a notification within a week. The court said that while giving reservation, the limit of 50 percent should be followed. The Other Backward Classes Commission constituted by the State Government for the study of backwardness had informed the Supreme Court that the prescribed study for OBC reservation has been done. On May 10, the court had said that reservation cannot be obtained without fulfilling the conditions prescribed for OBC reservation. At present, only SC-ST get reservation.

Advocate Varun Thakur, appearing for the petitioners Syed Jaffer and Jaya Thakur, had said in the Supreme Court that according to the Constitution, the Panchayat and Municipality elections should be announced immediately in Madhya Pradesh. According to the Constitution, while giving representation to the backward castes of the state, reservation should be given in Panchayat and Municipality elections. The Madhya Pradesh Government had filed the report of the Other Backward Classes Commission in the court. In the report, the Commission had claimed that 48 per cent voters in Madhya Pradesh belonged to the Other Backward Classes. The commission has recommended 35 percent reservation for OBCs in urban body and panchayat elections.(H.S.)
