Chennai,(thestates.news): Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday will unveil a statue of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai’s Anna Salai. The 16-foot statue will be erected on a pedestal at the Government Omandurar Hospital. Karunanidhi is set to reclaim his place on the pedestal, after 35 years when AIADMK supporters vandalised the statue on Anna Salai at the time of former CM MGR’s death in 1987. Karunanidhi expressed relief on December 24, 1987, because his young brothers (AIADMK party workers) stabbed him in the chest rather than the back.
Tamil Nadu CM Stalin, however, announced in the Assembly last year that the statue would be reinstalled in Anna Salai after assuming power. The statue, to be unveiled in Anna Salai on Saturday, will make history once again as it will be located on the campus of his brainchild, Tamil Nadu Secretariat, which was later converted into the Government Omandurar Estate Hospital by late ex-CM Jayalalithaa.
